Before the smash success of Azumanga Daioh, author Kiyohiko Azuma was a prolific gag manga artist. His early work led to him being hired by Pioneer LDC to create gag manga for some of their anime series, which was printed in some of the series' merchandise. After the success of Azumanga Daioh, his Pioneer-commissioned gag manga were collected into the book "Azumanga - The Kiyohiko Azuma Anthology". This book features gag manga adaptions of Tenchi Muyo!, Battle Athletes, El-Hazard: The Magnificent World, and Magical Girl Pretty Sammy, all by Kiyohiko Azuma.
After entering high school, Chiyo Mihama, a prodigious student, found herself accelerating through multiple grades. The distinct personalities of her classmates left her taken aback upon her initial encounter. Sakaki towered over others with a reserved demeanor, Tomo Takino was obnoxiously loud, Ayumu "Osaka" Kasuga exhibited forgetfulness yet an exceptional intelligence, Koyomi "Yomi" Mizuhara obsessed over her diet while having a fervent passion for karaoke, despite her poor singing abilities. Kagura, a competitive tomboy, rounded off the group. Over time, the group formed close bonds of friendship, sharing experiences of academic pursuits, summer excursions, and misadventures.
To celebrate the 10th anniversary of Azumanga Daioh, the manga is being repackaged into a new three-volume set, which will include three chapters of new material called Supplementary Materials. Each new chapter covers one year of high school, with all new adventures for Sakaki, Yomi, Tomo, Chiyo, Osaka, and Kagura.
