Caught off-guard, Ken Kaneki - a university freshman - unwittingly becomes a part of the world of ghouls and humans when he discovers that his date is, in fact, a ghoul who wants to eat him. Kaneki survives the near-fatal attack and undergoes surgery but finds out that he has become a half-ghoul. As his hunger for human flesh escalates and he struggles to fulfill it by conventional means, he befriends some friendly ghouls who run a coffee shop and help him adjust to his new life. However, his newfound peace is short-lived as Kaneki gets caught in the middle of a war between his friends and the CCG's forces, whilst ghouls from all over Tokyo show interest in him.
