Living with his impoverished family on a remote mountain, Tanjirou Kamado shoulders the responsibility of providing for his loved ones after the passing of his father. In an attempt to sell some charcoal, he descends to the nearby village on a chilly winter day. As night descends, he seeks refuge in the dwelling of a curious man who warns him of malevolent demons that dwell at night, lurking to satisfy their hunger for human flesh.
