Legend has it, a hundred years ago, the god of love plummeted into the mortal realm, his consciousness shattering into pieces, his time looping indefinitely—these were the kinds of tall tales Suo Mei liked to read. The summer after graduating from law school, Suo Mei lazes away at an old art studio, where a youth with rose-red eyes strikes up a conversation with her over a box of strawberries. She’d thought he was just a frivolous boy, but the truth seems much more complicated. “So, this time, will you choose to love her, or… kill her?”
“Servane, why didn’t you come see me?” A person, no, a mermaid, calling out to my great-grandfather’s granddaughter who resembled me. My ancestors, who loved mermaids so much, are said to have locked her in a lake. What was the mermaid thinking all this time, waiting for someone who had been dead for over a hundred years? Enduring terrible pain, day after day, every single day. That was probably, “I wanted to see you.” … It was clearly revenge.
